A decade of Right To Play
For more than a decade, the LEGO Foundation and Right To Play have worked together to expand access to playful learning in Africa. Together, the partnership has reached more than 7 million children and 200,000 teachers across 12 countries.
Different contexts, different approaches
What began as a shared ambition to improve children’s learning has developed into a partnership spanning education systems and humanitarian settings in 12 countries. There is no single way to bring learning through play to children across different countries and contexts. What works for a family with a young child may be very different from what a teacher needs in a classroom or what children need when their education is disrupted by crisis.
Over more than a decade, our partnership with Right To Play has responded by developing and adapting programmes for different stages of childhood, education settings and local contexts.
Growing together across countries and context
Over the years, the partnership has supported programmes designed for the varied communities in which they operate. Each takes a different approach, but all are grounded in playful approaches to learning.
For example, in Uganda and Tanzania, Play to Grow strengthened relationships between parents and children in refugee communities. In Rwanda, Plug in Play supported student’s engagement with robotics and coding. In Ghana, the Partners in Play programme reached more than 16,000 teachers and 600,000 students ine than 2,000 schools. These programmes show how playful learning can respond to different needs and contexts. During the pilot phase of Play to Grow, positive parent-child relationships increased from 42% to 69% in Tanzania and from 79% to 84% in Uganda.
Reaching children at scale
Across 12 countries, the partnership has reached more than 7 million children and 200,000 teachers.
The figures reflect the scale of the work, but also the value of sustained investment. By developing programmes over time and adapting them to different settings, Right To Play has supported children’s learning, wellbeing and development in a wide range of communities.
Looking ahead together
The partnership continues through Play to Grow, which runs until 2027 and supports parents to use play to strengthen children’s learning and development. As children’s needs and education systems change, we continue to build on what we have learned together.
